Migrant Bird Watch - 23 May

Wren Group Migrant Bird Watch - Sunday 23rd May 2010

We are pleased to announce that Tim Harris will be leading another Migrant Bird Watch walk, covering Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park, on Sunday 23rd May 2010.  The previous two MBWs proved very successful and popular, so we hope that even more of you will be able to join us at this next one

Here's what Tim has to say :
"April's migrant watch was a resounding success, with Whinchat, Wheatear and Willow Warbler just three of the 50-odd species recorded.  In late May most of the summer migrants will either have passed through our area, not to be seen again until late August, or will have established territories.  So this will be an opportunity to quantify the breeding birds on Wanstead Flats and in Wanstead Park, and maybe to catch up with a few of the later migrants.  The end-of-April migrant watch produced only one Swift and we should see more of these.  We didn't see a Hobby in April, but will be looking out for this mercurial falcon.  And there's always a chance of a passage wader by Jubilee Pond or Alexandra Lake."
Here are the details of where and when to meet :

Stage One :
06.30am, meet at Jubilee Pond car park, on Wanstead Flats.
We will then walk a 'zig-zag' route across the Flats, taking in the various different habitats along the way.
We expect to reach the Alexandra Lake area on the Flats by approximately 09.00am, where we will then take a slight detour into the City of London Cemetery cafe, where our 'early birders' will then stop off for a well-deserved refreshments break!  After this break, we will then continue on to Wanstead Park, to meet up with the next group joining the event.
Stage Two :
10.00am, meet at the Refreshment Kiosk in Wanstead Park.
We will then walk around Wanstead Park, with an estimated finish time of mid-day, or perhaps a little later.
You can join us at the first or second stage, or stay with us for both sections.  Or drop out after one stage - whatever is best for you.  You don't have to be a member of the Wren Group to join in - the event is open to everyone.

NB - the event may be cancelled, if the weather is too bad to proceed.  You can contact Tim on the day, if you have any doubts - contact details below.
